$L^2$-Betti numbers for subfactors

Summary: We study $L^2$-Betti numbers for von Neumann algebras, as defined by D. Shlyakhtenko and A. Connes in \cite{CS}, in the presence of a bi-finite correspondence, and prove a proportionality formula.
